The Council have been working really hard to tackle homelessness and rough sleeping in the district for a number of years, and it continues to be a high priority.

Key achievements so far

  • Over the last 3 years, our Housing Options team have prevented almost 1,300 households from becoming homeless, and helped a further 650 into accommodation from homeless situations.
  • We’ve bought an 8 bed property to provide temporary accommodation to single homeless applicants and have another in the pipeline
  • We’ve managed to keep our rough sleeper numbers relatively low through intensive support in the community provided by our staff and volunteers in local charities, alongside police and healthcare services.
  • We’ve been working with private sector landlords to reduce the risk of evictions

Time to refresh

There is still more work to do however. A lack of affordable housing, the cost of living crisis and potential loss of valuable support services are just some of the challenges we face.

To meet these challenges we are developing our new Preventing Homelessness and Rough Sleeper Strategy. As a starting point, we’ve held a series of focus groups with staff and local partners and are now looking for your input to help shape the strategy.
