Exmouth lifeboat in search for kitesurfer

At 5.20pm Thursday 12 January 2023, both Exmouth RNLI lifeboats, the all weather Shannon lifeboat 13-12 Cosandra and the inshore lifeboat, D-805 George Bearman II were tasked by H.M. Coastguard to attend a report of a missing kitesurfer off Exmouth seafront.

A lengthy and detailed search was commenced of the area by the volunteer crew of both vessels but they were stood down at 7.40pm when the kitesurfer called the Coastguard to confirm they were safe and well after hearing a rescue search was in progress.

The RNLI says  "British  waters are incredibly unpredictable and one of the biggest dangers with kitesurfing is kiting alone or in adverse conditions. Taking some simple steps to stay safe will reduce your chances of getting into trouble and help you get the most out of the sport you love."

The charity's advice is always kite with another person and if you go alone, take a means of calling or signalling for help.
