Exeter Police Team Turn Santa to Organise Festive Hampers for Senior Citizens

Exeter Neighbourhood Police Team are once again collecting food items to make Christmas hampers for the more elderly members of the community.

Officers are asking local people who can afford it to donate any food items to this festive cause, start a collection in their street or nominate an elderly person in their community who they feel would benefit from a food hamper this year.

Neighbourhood Team Leader Sergeant Jim Wellard explained: “Perhaps you know someone who has had a tough year, lost a loved one, been a victim of crime or is just struggling financially at the moment. Please comment on our Exeter Police Facebook page or email 30444@dc.police.uk (please do not send us a direct message or try to report crime via social media).

“Elderly residents are some of our most vulnerable people in society and as a police team we attend some very sad incidents involving older citizens. We started this Christmas hamper initiative in 2020 following a year of Covid lockdowns. We attended an increased number of concerns involving elderly persons in the community, many of whom live alone.

“Please look out for your vulnerable neighbours during the cold weather, be kind to older residents and if you know somebody is struggling to stay warm or feed themselves please make sure they get help.”

Police would like to include some festive items such as Christmas cake, yule log and mince pies in the hampers but tinned food and long life items are also very welcome, as well as tea and coffee, tins of soup, and household items such as toiletries.
